Then Sunday the end of the program with the regatta “long distance” on the route Mondello-Isola delle Femmine-Mondello. The Dutchman Stephan Van den Berg, an Olympic gold medalist in Los Angeles, could not disappoint. The surfer “orange” is the only one to break the supremacy of home athletes who are excelling in four of the five categories. Van den Berg, however, has only two points ahead, after six races, on the Tuscan Alessandro Torzoni, an old acquaintance of this regatta in Palermo and willing to overturn tomorrow the positions in the standings. The Frenchman Jean Philippe Delapierre and the other Olympic gold, the Austrian Chris Sieber, triumphant at the Sydney Games. In the other categories, the Sicilian sailors are the masters. Among the light is still Marco Casagrande, home athlete of the club Albaria, to lead the ranking. Behind him the Lazio-born Andrea Marchesi and with a wider margin the French Eric Belot and the Australian Tim Gourlay. Fifth overall and first of the under 15 the promising surfer Blasco Aronica del Cv Sferracavallo.

Family challenge between Palermo in the medium-heavy category. Alessandro Alberti of the Clubino del Mare continues to collect first places, followed by two bishops of the Albaria: Marco Ferrera and Giuseppe Zerillo. It does not stop the winning march of the Olympic Riccardo Giordano in the heavy category. It is fourth in the standings, preceded by the blue Roberta Piras and Rachele Balini, but it does not end to admire the beauty of the places and the excellent organization thinking that next year the World Cup will pass at home, in the waters of Perth and that it will not be easy to do better.

Saranno le due prove di domani ad assegnare a Mondello i titoli mondiali della course-race della classe Windsurfer. Poi domenica la conclusione del programma con la regata “long distance” sul percorso Mondello-Isola delle Femmine-Mondello. Non poteva deludere le aspettative l’olandese Stephan Van den Berg, oro olimpico a Los Angeles. Il surfista “orange” è l’unico a rompere la supremazia degli atleti di casa che stanno primeggiando in quattro delle cinque categorie. Van den Berg ha però solo due punti di vantaggio, dopo sei prove, sul toscano Alessandro Torzoni, una vecchia conoscenza di questo campo di regata palermitano e intenzionato a ribaltare domani le posizioni in classifica. Poco più indietro il francese Jean Philippe Delapierre e l’altro oro olimpico, l’austriaco Chris Sieber, trionfatore ai Giochi di Sydney. Nelle altre categorie, i velisti siciliani la fanno da padroni. Tra i leggeri è ancora Marco Casagrande, atleta di casa del club Albaria, a comandare la graduatoria. Alle sue spalle il laziale Andrea Marchesi e con margine più ampio il francese Eric Belot e l’australiano Tim Gourlay. Quinto assoluto e primo degli under 15 il promettente surfista Blasco Aronica del Cv Sferracavallo. 

Sfida tutta in famiglia tra palermitana nella categoria medio-pesanti. Continua a collezionare primi posti Alessandro Alberti del Clubino del Mare, tallonato da due alfieri dell’Albaria: Marco Ferrera e Giuseppe Zerillo. Non si arresta la marcia vincente dell’olimpico Riccardo Giordano nella categoria pesanti. L’atleta nato in questo golfo e giunto da Bangkok. dove vive, giusto per non mancare al richiamo di Mondello avrà domani da fare regata sull’olandese Harold Elfring, che lo tallona e sul francese Antony Lecadre, terzo in classifica. Infine sulla cresta dell’onda la marsalese Laura Linares, atleta del Roggero di Lauria. Ritornata in acqua in un grande appuntamento, intende lasciare il segno con la conquista del titolo iridato. Intanto a tardo pomeriggio Laura ha conquistato il primo alloro del programma sbaragliando il campo nella prova dello slalom. 

Da rilevare la presenza dell’australiana Sarah Kenny, nella doppia veste di atleta e di vice presidente World Sailing (Federazione Internazionale della Vela). E’ quarta in classifica, preceduta dalle azzurre Roberta Piras e Rachele Balini, ma non finisce di ammirare la bellezza dei luoghi e l’ottima organizzazione pensando che l’anno prossimo il Mondiale passerà a casa sua, nelle acque di Perth e che non sarà facile fare di meglio.
Domenica pomeriggio la conclusione dell’intero programma dei Mondiali Windsurfer con la premiazione.
Evento che passerà alla storia per la grandezza dei numeri e anche per il fatto che alcuni circoli nautici palermitani hanno fatto rete. Dal Roggero di Lauria, al Clubino del Mare, alla Lega Navale con il supporto e la collaborazione della società Italo-Belga.
